Month Two: Back To Being A Tourist

I cant really say that I have been having a blast these last few weeks.  Homesickness, depression and a negative wave going through my mind, it has not been easy.  Particularly after visiting home a few weekends back, I have not had it easy since getting back.  I would like to think that I am a positive person, full of life and someone who loves to laugh; however, when some things don't go to plan you have to keep adding to that plan and find a solution.  Or even a day out in the city, exploring, at the least.

Having mentioned my unexplained love for elephants previously,  I had been curious about the famous Zoologischer Garten since I visited Berlin for the very first time in 2014 - yes, it is a long word, (basically, The Berlin Zoo).  On Saturday the 19th March, I decided that I needed some colour or some hope in my new life, as I couldn't keep telling myself that everything will be ok and I needed to make it ok... So I did.  I went to see some elephants, and of course hippo's, bears, lions and everything else you would expect to see in a zoo!  I had an amazing time, and with temperature hitting highs of around 15 degrees (which is fantastic for Berlin in March), I was able to smile!

It was my first time at the zoo - yes, I had never even been to The London Zoo, so therefore was a great experience for me.  Seeing the friendly and playful elephants followed by vicious and hungry leopards, literally flying through their open panels to the smell of raw meat was very different for me.  I enjoyed watching the differences between all kinds of species and comparing them in my head.

Of course, being at 4'11" I had to get a selfie with the giraffes whilst I was there.  The beautiful print and long legs, on them are definitely worth seeing, not forgetting to mention their oh so long necks, also!

The motto of this day trip, for me, was do what you have got to do to lift your spirit up; even if this means simply visiting a zoo and pretending to be a tourist.  It is down to you to make the difference, so keep holding on and keep on going - remember that happiness can be eternal, and that all good things do not have to come to an end; so long as you realise what actually makes a difference to your life, and keep on doing whatever that is!

The Power of Rejection

When was the last time you did something without wondering 'what if?', or worrying about the outcome? Now I find this to be a bit of a problem in our society, and want to get to the bottom of it. I say it's a problem, because I see that a lot of people of all ages, holding back in doing what could change a lot in their lives and decisions.  I sometimes feel like rejection or being turned away in whatever I do is such an obstacle that I need to express the negative effect this may have on the lives of so many of us. In order to overcome this obstacle, the first question I ask myself is 'so what?'. This is key, because when you start answering your own questions, it's a lot simpler to picture why 'rejection' or an answer which isn't that of your expectations isn't actually an obstacle.  Stating facts or presenting opinions where due is a part of our nature, and the human race is one of the most confusing among all. The point is, you are ne...

Berlin: The City of Many Walls

So as I had mentioned before, I enjoy shopping and accept that it is possibly my worst addiction.  I haven't however mentioned specifics and have now got to move onto the more exciting detail.  Spending money on plane tickets.  My latest trip was to Berlin.  I have been there before for only two days but I must say that seeing just a wall and visiting the Christmas market was far from sufficient and I knew I had to go back and visit from the day I got there and began exploring; so here it was. I arrived in Berlin on a cold but sunny Sunday Afternoon and the first thing which caught my attention was the long streets - covered in art.  I don't think I had appreciated the fun and colourful walls which are covered in graffiti as much as I thought I did the last time I was there.   When I arrived at the Park Plaza on Wall Street, I noticed a lot of bikes on the street corner which were to rent.  Of course immediately I tried to get on one to see if my leg...

The Purpose of Shopping

Why do we shop? It seems like we spend most of our time, worrying too much about what we are going to wear and what others would think of it.  As much as we tell ourselves that we dress to impress ourselves, there is the undeniable fact that we visualise the likes on Instagram along with what filter we could use to post our next selfie; in our new outfit. Well, me, personally… I shop because it makes me happy.  You know that feeling when you feel like you need something so bad, that if you don’t have it your world will turn upside down and its no longer worth living in… well that.  Everytime I see something I like and try and convince myself with my own lies.  “You don’t need it, Ozlem,” I say, trying to justify the fact that I’m fibbing to myself.  I can’t quite understand why or how you can need an object so bad that you shop till you no longer have money, or to the point where you know payday seems to be getting further away. Let me not start on ...
