Perfume enhances our senses. Not just smell - but also the sense of being. Freedom. And it just makes sense... It's a subject which I have spoken about since I have been old enough to think and how it shapes so much of what we do and feel is so significant.
Airport sprees are especially a highlight as it means testing new fragrances and deciding which one I want next. Finding the one and drowning yourself in the deepness of the bottle and the journey it takes you on is an exciting part of the trip. One of the main factors for me is the memory that you create with just a smell. When you use a perfume at a specific time or place, it helps store that memory and combines the scent with that experience - this is especially why I prefer to go on a perfume hunt when I am travelling!
Being on holiday means that I get to relax and think about the perfume (which sticks to my travel hoodie and lingers in the hotel room for the week) and essentially, that scent becomes affiliated with that trip without even having purchased the bottle!
I used to be keen on picking up perfume that I have tested and liked, there and then. I believe that if you like something, you should purchase it in that moment to avoid any regrets later; but over the years I have learnt to go away and fully process whether or not that scent matches my personality. Being pressured by the sales associates that hang around and ask on average 3 times whether you "need any help" is tiring! - and living by the term "buy it if you like it" hasn't always worked in my favour as it means coming home and trying to scrub the tester off my wrist, but then realising I have 100ml's of an unopened bottle waiting for some miserable days of wear... can you relate? I have lost count of how many perfumes I have had to give away, because I've walked away and decided after making the rash purchase that I actually hate the smell.
It is also useful to remember that not every perfume goes with every outfit. For example, when I spray my bold and woody scents on a casual, sporty day I feel out of place. Almost like a poorly put together outfit. The stronger the scent, the bigger the impact of your presence; your appearance and influence in a room. One of my go-to's for the "less serious" days is Rose Blush by Jo Malone. It is subtle, yet striking. Long lasting, but not a massive waft wherever you go. A lot more of a humble yet pretty smell for the days we are not in the mood for attention-seeking, if it were. A brand new favourite of mine is Mumbai Noise by Byredo. This perfume is unreal and is referred to as "New York" by my household. I first tested this at London Heathrow T5, en route JFK, and couldn't stop thinking about it that entire trip - and that's when I knew that it was meant to be. Luckily for me, my husband turned up with a cute little gift box that had the magical words: Mumbai Noise printed on and I still cannot get enough. What comes to my mind when I close my eyes and smell it, is precious jewels. Think gold, diamonds, a treasure box. Super classy, unique and speaks for you when you enter a room - not like gossip in a loud room, though, but more of an "all eyes on me" type chat. It is spicy and strong, and lasts for days, even after having a wash!
Confidence and mood is what sets out our day ahead of us. Go get that perfume you've been thinking about - or go out and do some perfume shopping today! Remember, it is a part of who you are, and does reflect your personality and style, and once you have made it a part of your getting ready routine, there'll be no going back because no outfit is complete without a statement fragrance.
